Yeah, so I said I’d be writing some more stuff in the near future. I lied. And don’t think that because now I’m writing that all of a sudden I’m going to keep my promise. There’s one very simple reason for this: exams. I have my first law school exams on January 5, 8 and 10. In the meantime, there are a few things I will post now.

Yale chess is at the Pan-ams with two teams. Last night our A team beat Dartmouth 3.5 to 0.5 and this morning we just beat Miami-Dade’s A team 3 to 1. All I can say is I’m giddy as a schoolboy. And I’m excited about our B team because two of the three freshmen on the trip are on it!

Also, for those in the respective areas that I’ve forgotten to tell: I’ll be in New York for new year’s then back to Boston for finals. During the intercession (apparently the official name of the break between 1L finals and the start of second semester classes), I’ll be in France (Tours, one hour from Paris by train) and Germany (Cologne and Munich).
Finally, snobby latin is no longer monthly and no longer Latin. Hopefully the next poster (TBD) will be a bit more punctual than Vlad (not that I’m in a position to complain given my aforementioned tardiness). In the meantime, even though Oid’ ho theleis, logous theleis, I’m afraid I won’t be able to deliver much more for a while.

Merry belated Christmas and Happy New Year!

PS. Here are the games from the win against Miami-Dade.

Dan, the one among us who remembers the most Latin from high school, has just handed down the snobby latin phrase for the month of May with a small apology to April, which I’m sure feels slighted. I of course, missed out on posting the new phrase until now because I left for Myrtle Beach on the 9th, and only got back yesterday. But better late than never!

The new phrase is dis aliter visum, meaning “it seemed otherwise to the gods.” For example, I thought that after what happened at the beginning of the year with my cell phone, I wouldn’t be stupid enough to get my replacement wet. Dis aliter visum, as I forgot to remove it from my pocket before entering a hot tub in Myrtle Beach!

Which brings me to my second point. If you’ve called me and left a voicemail message since Tuesday, I haven’t gotten around to checking it yet. Email me (me AT [myfullname].com). As a public service announcement, I will point out that if you have T-Mobile, you can check your T-Mobile voicemail from any phone by dialing 1-805-MESSAGE (I think it’s 805, and I clearly haven’t tried it recently but will do so soon). Quite useful if you’re on vacation in Prague without your cell phone but for some crazy reason want to keep up with your voicemail.

Vlad, Max, Dan and I have decided that snobbish Latin phrases don’t have enough variety (id est, English speakers really only use a small subset of the eminently quotable Latin out there). We have therefore decided to pick up our own little morem of selecting a trendy Latin phrase each month, and using it in everyday speech, as well as in our writing. This post attempts to explain our practice, how you can join us, and a few initial suggestions for ground rules. Of course, everything besides the snobbish aspect is flexible.
Alas, we are egalitarian snobs, and so if you wish to join us in our snobbery, please let us know and we will add you ad listum hic publicandum.

Without further ado, then, our current snobby Latin phrase until the end of March (more than a month for inaugural purposes) is ut mos est nostra, meaning “as is our custom,” although if you don’t know what it means, I don’t know why we snobs are telling you.

In general, we will try to rotate the announcements of the phrases, though I think we’ve picked April’s already. If you decide to use the snobby latin phrase of the month in an online writing of yours, please make it a link back to the post announcing the phrase (exempli gratia, if using this month’s, link back to this post’s Permalink). Also if possible, please give it the technorati tag “snobby latin.”

One final note: Dan may sometimes pick Greek snobby phrases, as he is even more of an intellectual snob than we, knows Greek, and indeed loves to remind people of this fact. Other languages are also generally allowed, provided that they are snobby intellectual languages like Latin and Greek, and the phrase you are using is underutilized in English.

Technorati tag: snobby latin
