Yale trivia

Filed under: Classes, Uncategorized — Scott Charles Caplan @ 6:49 am

From a footnote in my Property casebook regarding the fact that some jurisdictions allow for very long leases:

Yale University still receives annual rents from 999-year leases of Connecticut farmland executed in the 1700s. Fred Strebeigh, Yale’s 999-Year Leases, Yale Alumni Mag., Dec. 1976, at 29.

I clearly need to look up that issue of YAM.

For check, for mate and for Yale.

I got a call from my friend Neeraj Singh last weekend. I was so excited by the news that only subcite training for the Blackletter Law Journal an entire week later brought me down enough to finally write up this glorious information. (more…)

Victory is ours. Woot!

Yale Football beat Cornell yesterday in Ithaca, 21 to 9. I missed the game because Vlad (who’s actually studying at Cornell now and should probably change the title of his blog) and I were having tea at TeaLuxe. I would say more, but I didn’t listen in on the game. And besides, I’ve been holding back even better news about a far more important Yale team.

The press release from Yale football can be found here.

Doh!

So I’m in the middle of doing laundry for the first time since my arrival in Cambridge (which, by the way, serves only to indicate that I have far too many clothes for my 8 by 12 cell room).
Now, back at Saybrook, there were more dryers than washers, so I assumed the same was true here. Five machines of one type, four of another. You can probably see where I’m going here, and you’re absolutely right. I dried my clothes before washing them. I’m feeling like an idiot right now, but not quite as much of an idiot as this guy, who for some reason thought students should need to use their keys to travel between floors.

Update:  It turns out that even after realizing my first mistake I still got something wrong. One of the machines that looks like a washer is in fact a dryer, meaning there are in fact more dryers than washers. It’s times like these that laundromats start sounding better and better.

Yale Football begins

I’m listening right now to 960 WELI’s (sorry WYBC, I couldn’t figure out the site) live online coverage of San Diego @ Yale. If you’re on a Mac, you may need this little bit from Flip4Mac.

San Diego is up 7 – 0 at the end of the first quarter.
Since this is my first post in the Yale Football category, it’s also filed under New Categories.

UPDATE: We lost miserably, 43 to 17.

Europe, Jews, and a cartoon

Filed under: Links, Soapbox — Scott Charles Caplan @ 2:59 pm

Quick Link: a rare political post from Hugh MacLeod.
Food for thought:

And while on the subject of the Arab-Israeli conflict, I’ll point out that my friend (and fellow Yalie) Aatif Iqbar often has interesting things to say on the issue, including this recent post. Aatif may not have clever cartoons with his writing, but how on Earth would I have heard of this news story otherwise?

9/11

Filed under: Friends & Family, Links — Scott Charles Caplan @ 9:11 am

I wasn’t planning on writing anything to commemorate 9/11, and I’m still not going to. I do figure, though, that I should bring attention to this amazing cartoon from Hugh MacLeod (in case you haven’t noticed, I’m addicted to his cartoons).

I will also point out that this is not categorized under Soapbox, since it is not a political post.

Second quick post

Filed under: Soapbox — Scott Charles Caplan @ 3:45 pm

I started 1776 a little while ago (though I don’t think I’ve indicated that yet on my sidebar), and the other night I was inclined after reading in it to look something up in the Declaration of Independence. In particular, McCullough referred to the United States of America as having been established by the Declaration. I wanted to verify this, so I sat up in bed, pulled my copy of the National Constitution Center’s Constitution + Declaration of Independence off my Gropius bookshelf and flipped to the Declaration:

“WE, therefore, the Representatives of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, in GENERAL CONGRESS, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the World…”

Whether McCullough was right in the context of how he referred to the United States of America in 1776 is still not clear to me, but he certainly wasn’t off his rocker…

Now, I told you that bit there to remind you of something else in that sacred document, for after I read that paragraph of the Declaration (the last one), I felt like reading the rest of it, where I noticed this allegation among the several detailed against King George III.

“FOR transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended Offences:”

Now it seems like King George II is at it. And who says there’s no such thing as progress? In 225 years, it’ll be an elected president using secret prisons in Romania and Egypt, and in 450 years, it’ll finally be a thing of the past!

Two quick posts during my first week of classes (this is the first). It’s not my usual idea of what to post about regarding chess, but I thought it was pretty cool, so I’m showing off this link. Discovered via http://del.icio.us/tag/chess.

Makes me like Tim Tagaris even more…

I’m already moved into Cambridge (though not quite ensconced; thanks Max for the new word), and my first post since my arrival really should have been about HLS. I’m sure I’ll get to that some other time, seeing that I have three years for my sentence until my degree. But in the meantime, I saw this item from the Ned Lamont campaign blog and have to post it before the Boylston Chess Club beats me to it. You should be confused right now as to how a Connecticut Senate campaign has anything to do with a Boston chess club, so I’ll quote from the post and relieve that confusion for you:

“They’ve played checkers all campaign, now they’re trying to pick up a chess board. Don’t let them.”

And all I can think is, “Checkers is for tramps.”

Note for friends and family: if you haven’t already, go read the explanation of how to use RSS to keep up to date with me through my site.
