New Categories

The first new category to be announced in the Category of New Categories is that of New Categories. That is not to say the Category of New Categories in the “Category Theory” sense of the word but rather in the Wordpress sense of the word, since for one thing, while I may have objects of the category, I have no idea what the morphisms would be. Actually, now that I think of it, if I could only get that intersect plugin to work properly, I might be able to come up with the morphisms, but I’d have to expand the range of objects. But why would any one care about such a Category?

If you have absolutely no idea what I’m talking about, this may or may not help.

    Riiight… maatrices.:)

I read the first parts of the wiki article. This makes Set Theory look applied. I don’t think I can follow it too well without paper and pencil.

But abstruse specifics aside, the notion of putting something so abstract and ridiculous in a blog appeals to me. If I were to do something similar in my area of research, I’d start a Facebook / MySpace (shudder) group devoted to group formation. To be a member, you’d have to have started a group w/in the respective community; officer titles would be given to individuals who’ve started the most groups in their facebook membership time. And so on… this isn’t a particulary bright idea at this point, but it’s a germ. And germs are important. Even though you hate them:)

Vlad, you may or may not be aware
    A) that there is a facebook “group” (to add to the confusion) called The Category of Facebook Groups (it’s at Harvard, there may be others out there), and I am a “member” (it would be so much better if I were an “object,” but that’s for another day); or,

    B) that the post is a little less abstrct (albiet about as ridiculous) as you think. You see, I created the category “New Categories” in Wordpress, but neither the page for the category, nor the relevant RSS feed are “active,” until I have a first post filed under the new category. So I had to write a post under the category “New Categories,” and once I wrote the first sentence, the rest just suggested itself to me and it wsa too tempting not to go ahead with.

The actual idea behind the “New Categories” category is explained here.

PS. Note that if you had used (maybe you have, but I’ll plug it anyway) the co.mments.com button on the page to track this conversation, you would have been alerted to this response in your feedreader. Cool, huh?
